Jamie Carragher hits Arsenal with brutal putdown during defeat at Brentford

Liverpool great Jamie Carragher slammed Arsenal’s defending as they were beaten by Brentford on the opening night of the new season.

The Gunners were already heading into the game facing a few problems with Gabriel, Eddie Nketiah and Thomas Partey all out injured, and Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both ill.

But Mikel Arteta’s problems only increased at the Brentford Community Stadium as the newly promoted side playing their first game in the Premier League claimed all three points.

The hosts took the lead through Sergi Canos, when he cut inside and fired a low shot through the legs of Calum Chambers and past Bernd Leno.

Thomas Frank's side then doubled their lead when a long throw wasn’t cleared and Christian Norgaard arrived at the back post to head the ball home.

And it was that goal that got Carragher irate, with the former Reds defender claiming the Gunners were “weak” and had been “bullied” in the build-up to it.

“[Thomas Frank] he knows what he’s doing, alright. You’re playing Arsenal, get it in the box,” he said on Sky Sports commentary.

Before he continued: “How do you describe Arsenal there? It’s just Arsenal. Weak, bullied, men against boys again.

“New season, same old story: don't win the first one, let it bounce, two Brentford players get out the way, 2-0.

“He just comes in Norgaard at the far post, Ben White, Calum Chambers nowhere to be seen.

"They’re top of the league if they can hang on, Brentford.”
