Jamie Carragher highlights another key Virgil van Dijk moment that helped Liverpool beat Tottenham

Jamie Carragher has highlighted a key moment involving Virgil van Dijk which helped Liverpool pick up a crucial 2-1 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

We all now know about his expert defending which led to Moussa Sissoko shooting over the bar, but this incident centred on Spurs’ star Harry Kane.

The Sky Sports pundit pointed out a potential title-winning tackle from Van Dijk in the closing stages that helped the Reds win possession.

In the build-up to the corner where Liverpool scored a stoppage-time winner, Van Dijk crunched into Spurs forward Harry Kane to relieve the pressure and then passed on for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A brilliant diagonal pass then set the hosts on their way to winning a corner, which resulted in Toby Alderweireld’s own-goal.

Carragher explained on Monday Night Football: “This moment was the most important. The goalkeeper sliced one out, the play was stuck for 30 seconds or a minute or so and the game became scrappy.

“It was a challenge from van Dijk on Harry Kane - one of the strongest strikers in the Premier League that stopped it.

“He showed power to win the ball back and get Liverpool going. They get a bit luck with the pass but all of a sudden there’s space to attack.

“The pass from Alexander-Arnold when he was under pressure was unbelievable. What a pass at that time of the game. Liverpool went onto win a corner and that’s where the goal came from.

Mohamed Salah response will be Liverpool Premier League title concern for Man City

“So from nowhere, a tackle from van Dijk on the half-way line and a pass won the corner.”

The dramatic win now means Liverpool lead Manchester City by two points but the Blues can jump back to the top by defeating Cardiff City on Wednesday.
