Jamie Carragher hands Chelsea Liverpool transfer warning in Man Utd win as summer plan explained

Jamie Carragher's verdict on the Liverpool midfield is a warning for Todd Boehly and Chelsea ahead of the summer. The Blues are likely to be competing with Jurgen Klopp's men at the end of the season, with a number of overlapping targets, and have been told of what could face them after seeing Manchester United dismantled 7-0 at Anfield.

The Reds were one of the sides keen on signing Enzo Fernandez but lost out on that front, with Boehly and Co acting quickly and aggressively to pick him up in January. There are still several world class stars who will be at the centre of bidding wars come the next transfer window, though.

In this category are both Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, whilst Jude Bellingham is one of the most sought after central players in world football. There is also the case of Mason Mount, who is a target for Liverpool amid his contract uncertainty at SW6.

Chelsea themselves are still looking to add to their midfield, despite buying Fernandez and with N'Golo Kante getting close to a new deal for his contract. That being said, Carragher was open about where Liverpool's midfield is falling short this season and it mirrors the situation at Stamford Bridge.

"That [Liverpool’s midfielders are either too young or too old] is just an added description, not so much a criticism of the players," he said on commentary during the 7-0 win for Liverpool against Manchester United.

"More the actual plan from the people upstairs behind the scenes that have allowed the team to have an age profile where they feel some players don’t have the experience for Liverpool to be really successful and maybe some players don’t have the energy or legs anymore. That, I’m sure, will be rectified in the summer."

Potter has had to work with an injury-prone midfield but did see two new recruits through the door in the winter. Andrey Santos has since been loaned back out, whilst young starlets Lewis Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka have also been used on occasion. It's left the club understaffed in that area, especially after Jorginho was sold on deadline day to Arsenal.

Liverpool's small surge in form has left them challenging for the top four once more though, whilst Chelsea have been left behind, meaning that Klopp's side may well enter the market with an advantage over Boehly's ownership.

Champions League football is a big lure for potential recruits and Carragher's words - along with the need for new additions - is dangerous competition for Chelsea.
