Jamie Carragher gives his view on VAR after dramatic defeat for Everton at Leicester

Jamie Carragher labelled Everton’s dramatic defeat as a “great day for VAR” as the Blues were denied a point at Leicester City.

Marco Silva’s side suffered a loss on the road as the pressure was once again ramped up on the Everton manager in another game where VAR took centre stage.

After Richarlison had given the visitors the lead, Ben Chilwell looked to have earned the Foxes a first-half penalty after going down under the challenge of Mason Holgate.

Referee Graham Scott’s decision to point to the spot was rightly overturned though - with replays showing no contact between the two players.

Everton couldn’t hold on for a vital win though, with Jamie Vardy equalising after the break before Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed a stoppage-time winner.

The Nigerian striker looked to have been denied at first, with the offside flag being raised as he put the ball beyond the reach of Jordan Pickford.

But VAR once again intervened, ruling that Iheanacho was just onside to hand the victory to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

And, ahead of the Merseyside derby against Liverpool, the pressure continues to build on Silva – but former Red Carragher believes VAR showed its worth in the Blues’ defeat.

“VAR’s had a great day,” Carragher said during Sky Sports’ Super Sunday.

“There’s a lot of criticism, people for, people are split.

"The last time we were in the studio, Everton were involved against Spurs, and it was getting to the stage when I was thinking almost go back to the old way.

“But [yesterday], there’s no doubt, you think of the penalty, a penalty would have been given that shouldn’t have been a penalty, so it’s done well there.

“As soon as I first saw it [Iheanacho goal], I didn’t think it was offside, and it proved to be the case. It’s a great day for VAR.”
