Jamie Carragher gives credit to Manchester United's defensive display against Chelsea

Jamie Carragher has insisted that Manchester United must be given credit for their defensive performance against Chelsea.

United held the Premier League leaders to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge as they continue to move forwards following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It was a game that was largely dominated by Chelsea, however, who had 66 per cent possession of the ball and managed 24 attempts on goal compared to a mere three from United.

However, it was Michael Carrick's side who took the lead shortly after the break after Jadon Sancho raced through following a poor Jorginho touched and calmly slotted past Edouard Mendy.

The Blues midfielder would earn redemption as he scored a penalty to equalise after Aaron Wan-Bissaka kicked Thiago Silva in the box, though United withstood a late onslaught to hold on for a point.

While United didn't have much going forward throughout the game, Carragher does believe they defended well.

"I thought Chelsea played really well until the final third. You have to give credit to Manchester United as well," he said in the Sky Sports studio after the game.

"I don't think it was by chance the positions McTominay and Matic found themselves in throughout the game. I think when you play a big four against Chelsea you can sometimes get outnumbered especially at the back post but you saw every time the ball came in the box it felt like it was flooded with United players.

"I thought, in general, watching the game Chelsea dominated the game besides a ten or fifteen minute spell. There was always bodies for United and you have to sometimes give them credit."
