Jamie Carragher explains why he left Chelsea’s Mason Mount out of his team of the season

Even before Thomas Tuchel arrived, Mason Mount was showing why there is so much excitement surrounding him at such a young age. The Blues look set to finish in the top four in addition to qualifying for two finals, including Europe’s biggest stage, and the English youngster has certainly played his part.

However, his performances weren’t enough to warrant a place in Jamie Carragher’s team of the season, a decision that he defended on Twitter following the revelation on Monday Night Football yesterday.

When asked whether Mount was ever in consideration for a position in the midfield, Carragher responded by tweeting: “Yes, he was, but I had two attacking midfielders & could not have left KDB or Fernandes out.”

It’s hard to argue with those two names, especially when you consider the numbers they consistently produce, but you can’t help but feel a little sorry for Mount, who has really come into his own and indicated that he will be a force for years to come.

Carragher also commented on what might be the next battle of the best in Phil Foden and Mason Mount.

Manchester City’s Foden edged the Chelsea man to a spot in Carragher’s team of the year because he has been playing in a front-three whereas Mount has been in the midfield.

Regardless of whether you think Mount deserves a spot in the team of the season or not, one thing you can be sure of is that Chelsea have a huge talent on their hands, and this is just the beginning of a very promising career.
