Jamie Carragher explains Manchester United's biggest issue in mounting title challenge

Jamie Carragher thinks Manchester United need to sign a centre-forward in the summer if they are to seriously rival Manchester City for next season's Premier League title.

United are 10 points adrift of their Manchester rivals, who are very close to securing their third league title in four seasons.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have been boosted by the news that Edinson Cavani has signed a one-year extension on his current deal at Old Trafford, but they have still been linked with other strikers, namely Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Carragher, despite admitting he "loves" Cavani, thinks United are still a centre-forward short of properly challenging City in the 2021/22 campaign.

The Sky Sports pundit also spoke about how bringing in Jadon Sancho could have a negative impact on the progression of Mason Greenwood at Old Trafford.

“I don’t think they’ll have the centre-forward and I absolutely love Cavani," the former Liverpool vice-captain explained on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"I’ve said consistently that Manchester United need a 25-year-old Cavani.

"There’s a lot of talk today because he’s signed, but the big thing for me is Greenwood.

"The thing with bringing Sancho in is that he’s got to play 70 or 80% of the games on the right-hand side, where he normally plays. I just don’t think Mason Greenwood is ready yet to almost have him and Cavani as the centre-forwards.

"You’ve got an almost really old guy, who’s done brilliantly or a really young guy, who’s maybe not ready physically to lead the line for United.

"I think Greenwood has started 19 games this season, that next season, the natural progression is to go to 30, or 35 starts.

"I think United buying a Harry Kane or a Haaland, and then using Greenwood from the right, coming in on that left foot, I think he’s brilliant at that.

"Physically, it helps him because he’s not straight down the middle, holding the ball up with his back to play. I’d be really wary of United, if they brought Sancho in, would that stunt the progression of Greenwood?”
