Jamie Carragher doubts Jurgen Klopp will extend Liverpool contract

Jamie Carragher doubts Jurgen Klopp will stay at Liverpool beyond his contract end date.

The German has been a huge success at Anfield and last season delivered a first league title in 30 years.

Klopp has also led Liverpool to two Champions League finals during his five-year tenure, winning the competition in 2019.

The 53-year-old has been well backed by the club's American owners, the Fenway Sports Group, with club chief Michael Edwards also playing a vital role in creating a winning team.

Carragher though is not convince that Klopp will remain on Merseyside beyond 2024 when his current deal is up, but maintains both he and FSG have left their mark on Liverpool.

He told the Liverpool Echo : "So I think their legacy when they sell up, as they eventually will do at some stage, Anfield will be unrecognisable and Liverpool will have one of the best training grounds in the world.

"They brought in the first title in 30 years, they got Jurgen Klopp at this club for longer than he's been at any other, I am not quite sure he will stay at the end of his current contract.

"And fingers crossed there's a few more trophies before Klopp goes or FSG go, whatever stage that is. So yes, I think they have done a great job.

"To be the owners that won the league, it is their legacy, isn't it?"

Klopp himself has underlined his intention to return home to Germany once his contract expires and take a year out.

That would mean him holding the reigns at Anfield for eight full seasons.

Nevertheless the German has maintained that a lot can change in four years and is keen not to predict the future.

"I've got four years left which feels like an eternity in football," he said previously.

"A lot can happen during this time. I would assume that in four years I will think about whether to renew or not."
