Jamie Carragher disagrees with Roy Keane over Manchester United appointing Ralf Rangnick

Manchester United's expected move to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager has been a hot topic in recent days.

Following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino emerged as the frontrunner for the United job having been linked with the role at Old Trafford on other occasions in the past.

It now seems as though the Red Devils are set to recruit Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis, who has made a name for himself coaching in Germany and is currently Lokomotiv Moscow's manager of sports and development.

United then hope to have a permanent boss in place at the end of the current campaign, with Rangnick expected to remain at the club in a consultancy role for two years.

Providing his view on the imminent arrival of the former RB Leipzig manager, Keane argued that opting for an interim coach to temporarily steady the ship is far from being an 'ideal' situation for Liverpool's rivals.

“First of all, it was disappointing for Ole to finish on such a low and going through a difficult time .The Watford result and performance was really poor,” he told Sky Sports.

“Obviously, I’ve argued with Jamie about a manager getting enough time and Ole did get enough time and the results and the performances over the last couple of months have been really poor.

“So, there was no real surprise after the Watford game but the club now have to regroup, get somebody in and get the deed over the line.

"I don’t think it’s ideal this interim stuff until the end of the season, but it is what it is and they have to get on with it.

“But, ultimately, when I look at the last few performances from the players, they’re nowhere near good enough for Man United but the manager paid the price."

Meanwhile former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, like Jurgen Klopp, is of the view that United are likely to reap the rewards of Rangnick's experience.

The 43-year-old described his likely move to Old Trafford as a 'positive step' for the club and believes he will help secure Champions League football for next season.

"I think the appointment of who it looks like they’re going to bring in is a positive step in terms of how he wants the football played, now the top teams all play that way,” he told Sky Sports.

“Nobody has to play the same way, but top-level football is played like that. United were a million miles away from that.

“I think this guy is coming in, Ralf Rangnick, will make sure United get in the Champions League next season.

“But the biggest job he has it to identify the next coach. His role will be taking away from the people at the top and they will take advice from him. He will want the next coach to be in his mould.”
