Jamie Carragher has been quick to disagree with Gary Lineker's suggestion that Trent Alexander-Arnold should be deployed in a midfield role at Liverpool.
The Reds right-back has continued to grow in stature and is now one of Jurgen Klopp's most important players.
Alexander-Arnold's attacking qualities, especially his passing ability, are his strongest asset.
Liverpool have benefitted on numerous occasions from the 22-year-old's crossing with his assist tally underlining that.
The academy graduate began life as a midfielder and there have been calls for him to resume that role.
Lineker is among those who believes playing in the middle of the park would see his influence on games grow.
He said on Twitter : "Said it many times, but the best passer in English football is @TrentAA. He should be playing, like he did as a kid, in midfield.
"Lahm switched, Kimmich too. The best players should be in a position where they can more frequently use their brilliance."
Carragher was quick to hit back though insisting Liverpool benefit too much from his current role.
"No he shouldn’t, full backs get more of the ball than anyone & a bit more time on it to pick out their passes," he responded.
"The way Klopp sets up he’s virtually a midfielder in possession anyway. The amount of assists he gets means it would be mad to change his position."
Alexander-Arnold, who came up with seven assists last term as well as two goals, has previously discussed his positional switch.
Playing at right-back gave him a quicker route into the first-team and he's previously said that the midfield area looks "chaotic".
"Who decided the position change? It was me, Neil Critchley and Alex Inglethorpe," he told BBC Sport .
"Critch was my under-18 manager and Alex was head of the academy. I wanted to get into the first team as soon as possible, and we decided that was the most straightforward route.
"It was difficult [to adjust] because when you play higher up you are very rarely isolated in a defensive situation. That was the strangest thing - being one-on-one with someone out wide, with no-one to help.
"I've always enjoyed right-back as there is a lot more freedom going forward. It's a lot more chaotic in the middle."
Jurgen Klopp is by no means short of midfield options as it is, even with Gini Wijnaldum departing in the summer.
Harvey Elliott has return from his loan spell at Blackburn and the teenager has started Liverpool's last two games.
Jordan Henderson, Thiago, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones are also options for the Reds.
