Jamie Carragher delivers verdict on Timo Werner's Chelsea debut and makes Liverpool prediction

Jamie Carragher said he was impressed with Timo Werner's debut for Chelsea, after the German striker was handed his first Premier League start against Brighton.

Werner, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £47million, led the line at the AMEX Stadium and played a key role in helping his side take the lead.

After a stray back pass from Brighton midfielder Stephen Alzate, Werner reacted quickest to intercept and take the ball around Seagulls goalkeeper Mat Ryan, who had no option but to bring the striker down for a penalty.

Jorginho dispatched the spot-kick and the Blues went on to claim a 3-1 win after further goals from Reece James and Kurt Zouma.

After the game, Carragher said he believes Chelsea have signed a player of real quality.

“He’s come in, he looks sharp, he got the penalty," the former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

"I think it’s also the price-tag as well. Whenever you bring in a player, you never know how it’s gonna go, and you think if it doesn’t go well, would you get the money back?

"I think the price that they got him wasn’t too extortionate. I think he’s a really good signing, I really do."

Werner emerged after the game with ice strapped to his knee after taking a knock in the clash with Ryan for the Chelsea penalty.

But the striker confirmed he should be fine to make his home debut against champions Liverpool at the weekend.

And Carragher believes the Germany forward could thrive at Stamford Bridge if the Reds play their customary high defensive line.

"You talk about Liverpool, and how he played against Brighton and had so much space, there will definitely be space against Liverpool - that’s how they play - a risky high-line, at times," Carragher added.

"It wasn’t right against Leeds, Liverpool as a back-four, it was all over the place. If it’s anything similar, he’ll get massive joy against that.

"When you play against Liverpool, though, people like Havertz and Mount may not get space because Liverpool push up so high and they compact that midfield so much.”
