Jamie Carragher delivers VAR verdict that will delight Tottenham supporters after Man City draw

Jamie Carragher has weighed into the VAR debate following the controversy from Tottenham Hotspur's 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The Premier League champions thought they had won a thrilling game right at the death when Gabriel Jesus scored. However, the goal was ruled out thanks to a VAR check as a handball was spotted in the build up.

Much of the response in the aftermath has been of criticism as well as confusion.

However, Carragher's opinion on VAR will likely be music to the ears of Spurs supporters.

"Yes [I am happy with it]. I think VAR’s taken a lot of criticism," Carragher said on Monday Night Football. "Unjust criticism. I think in some cases it’s been absolutely fantastic and a massive success and I think that’s evident in what happened in the last minute at Man City.

"VAR was brilliant on this. If people have got a problem, it’s with the law. This now (the ball brushing Laporte’s arm) is not allowed. I personally think that handball should just be disallowed if the person scores with the hand, not sets one up but it’s there in law.

"So that’s VAR at its best. Fantastic. It spots something that no one else has spotted - that’s what it’s there for.

"And afterwards, I saw some of the players come out and say: ‘What is this rule? What if it hits a defender? It doesn’t count?’

"And we listen to the players - I think it was De Bruyne and Gundogan put a tweet out and Lloris was laughing because he didn’t know what had gone on.

"And we said: ‘Isn’t this a joke, VAR? The player’s don’t even know what’s going on.'

"You know why the players don’t know what’s going on? Because you know when the referee comes into a meeting like he does every year?

"They’re on their phones, they’re not listening and they haven’t got a clue what the rules are.

"I was probably one of the same.

"I don’t know every law or every rule within the game. We should actually be laughing at them. They don’t know what’s going on.

"We went to that meeting in Stockley Park. We were told about the handball. You may not agree with it, but it’s there. It’s a rule. And that, for me, is VAR at its best."
