Jamie Carragher delivers surprising Kepa Arrizabalaga verdict after Chelsea's loss to Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says he 'feels sorry' for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard has come under intense criticism for his performances in a Chelsea shirt and it appears he could be replaced by the incoming Edouard Mendy, who is set to arrive from Stade-Rennais.

Kepa endured his latest nightmare display against Liverpool today after his pass was intercepted by Sadio Mane, who reacted quickly to turn the loose ball in for his and Liverpool's second of the game, which finished 2-0 to the Reds.

The mistake was enough for most to pile on more criticism for Kepa, but Carragher had some sympathy for the £72million signing from 2018.

“I actually feel sorry for him a bit now," he said on Sky Sports. "There’s a new goalkeeper coming in, so there’s not too much more we can say.

"It must be tough for him, he’s going through a tough period. We’re being critical of him, but that’s our jobs.

"You do feel for him because I think back to sometimes in my career where it wasn’t going great and he’s just having one of those nightmare moments.”

Frank Lampard is understood to be unhappy with Kepa's performances having largely trusted him last season, limited for options.

It now seems inevitable that Mendy, when he does eventually arrive, will take Kepa's place as Chelsea number one.
