Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has leapt to the defence of Rhys Williams after the teenager received criticism for his role in the FA Cup exit at Manchester United.
The 19-year-old centre-back has been thrown into the deep end this season to help fill the void in the club’s centre-back crisis.
Williams has provided cover at centre-back alongside Fabinho this term, along with Nat Phillips, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sit on the sidelines with long-term injuries.
Williams was caught out by Marcus Rashford in the defeat to United as the England striker gave the hosts the lead. 19-year-old Williams was subsequently criticised by a portion of supporters online.
But Carragher was quick to defend the young centre-back, writing: “Thank god there was no Twitter when I was playing.
“He’s a young kid still learning & was left alone & exposed far too often.”
