Jamie Carragher defends Everton but Sven-Goran Eriksson highlights problem

Jamie Carragher offered a partial defence of Everton's tactics in the 4-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The former Liverpool defender was analysing the game on Monday Night Football along with ex-England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

But the Swede was not quite so forgiving in his assessment of the match at Stamford Bridge.

Carragher began by discussing the approach Carlo Ancelotti has taken in his reign so far.

He said: "We talk about 442 and systems. I always think a system is probably more when you lose the ball.

"A manager will say 'back into your shape, get together'. You look at Everton's shape with the ball [against Chelsea], it's almost like a Barcelona, Johan Cruyff.

"You've got a back three. You've got a midfield diamond. And then you've got a front three.

"The problem for them is that it's the two fullbacks [as wingers], which is why they lose the goal [Pedro goal].

"This is what Ancelotti's done a lot since he has come to Everton.

"They almost defend 442, but when they have the ball they always have three at the back.

"Whether it's a midfielder there or one of the full-backs that stays with the centre-backs.

"But once they lose the ball, watch how quickly they try and get back into shape.

"I don't think Everton's shape is that bad. It could be slightly better of course. I actually think this is brilliant football from Chelsea."

Sven also highlighted how well Frank Lampard's side performed in their victory.

But he believed it was not a great day at the office for the Everton boss.

Eriksson said: "First of all Chelsea played very well.

"It was a really 'no' day for Ancelotti - and he's a specialist with 442.

"But the big problem areas were the distance between the strikers and midfield, the midfield and defenders.

"It's too far. It's space all over, behind strikers and behind midfielders. Too much space.

"It doesn't really matter which system you use if you don't keep the team together. That's a must.

"This was not - I'm sorry Carlo! - this was not a good example of how to play 442."
