Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing review of Liverpool‘s display at West Ham, which cost them two points to leave them just three points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
After Sadio Mane’s controversial opener, whereby James Milner was clearly in an offside position in the build-up, Michail Antonio equalised for the hosts before the break.
And Divock Origi wasted a glorious chance late on to snatch all three points when sent through on goal, despite the officials failing to spot the Belgian’s offside position when the pass was made.
After a second successive draw, Carragher responded angrily to the performance, singling out Naby Keita for criticism, but refusing to attribute nerves from the title race for the failure to win.
“Really poor performance,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football. “I wouldn’t even put it down to this pressure of the title. I just think there were so many players who performed so poorly.
“I said yesterday that Manchester United have a better squad than them and I think we are seeing little signs of it.
“The right back situation; Klopp’s made a big mistake in letting Nathaniel Clyne go. I don’t understand why he did that. I know there were a couple of injuries after (he left) but you don’t need to let him go.
“At the moment James Milner has played there twice now. Watching him play right back you can’t quite believe that he played left back so well. He looked like someone completely out of position.
“Keita, who they paid big money for, in midfield keeps losing the ball. Firmino doesn’t seem himself. Salah, we didn’t see anything from him tonight.
“That’s a worry going forward. Not in terms of this pressure in the League. More actually when there are a few injuries in different positions, it doesn’t look like that solid, real Liverpool side that we’ve seen for the last four of five months. It doesn’t quite feel right.”
