Jamie Carragher criticises 'arrogant' Liverpool error against Leeds United

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said Virgil van Dijk was guilty of an 'arrogant' error following his mishap on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp's side welcomed newly-promoted Leeds United to Anfield for a match that started off with a blistering pace, with both sides exchanging goals.

After the Dutch defender had restored Liverpool 's lead with a header following a corner, his poor defending allowed Patrick Bamford to level the scores for the second time.

Van Dijk failed to deal with a looped ball over the top to the Leeds striker, failing in his attempt to flick the ball away from danger, and earned strong words from Carragher as a result.

"Alisson was not happy. He gets in between the centre backs and Virgil van Dijk, that’s just too arrogant," he said on Sky Sports' commentary.

"He tries to flick it around the corner to Andy Robertson instead of dealing with it.

"Maybe that comes from the fact that it’s Leeds, a new team, and he thinks it’s a little bit too easy.

"Patrick Bamford, he’s already had one chance through on goal, and he’s been given a gift."

Liverpool were leading 3-2 as the teams headed in for half time.
