Jamie Carragher compares Manchester United transfer strategy to 'Supermarket Sweep'

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has compared Manchester United's transfer strategy to the TV gameshow Supermarket Sweep.

United have suffered a disgruntling transfer window bringing in three new additions in the form of Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen. The entire summer will perhaps be defined by deals they have not been able to get over the line.

Frenkie de Jong was seen as Erik ten Hag's main targets this summer, however complications over deferral of wages at Barcelona has left United seeking alternatives. Juventus' Adrien Rabiot looked set to be joining the Reds, however that deal collapsed over personal terms.

Ten Hag is now targeting Casemiro with personal terms having now been agreed between the Brazilian and United. A €60m deal looks set to be agreed however he is unlikely to be signed to feature against Liverpool on Monday night.

Despite United seemingly looking ready to announce their fourth signing of the window, Carragher has slammed United's transfer business plan in his Telegraph column. He said: "Just look at the Adrien Rabiot deal, which collapsed this week due to the player’s wage demands.

"If you are a club like United, you should not be pulling out of transfers - after agreeing a fee with the selling team - due to wage demands. Someone at the club should already know what sort of salary the player wants, long before it reaches this point.

"They have also spent weeks chasing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, and now they are running around trying to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid. From De Jong, to Rabiot, to Casemiro.

"They are all different players with different styles and ages. What is the plan here?

"Where is the strategy? It is embarrassing.

"Erik ten Hag will want his own players, of course, and so far this summer United have backed him in the moves for Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia. I understand that, because it is hard to say no to a new manager when he has just been appointed, but the desperation at this stage of the transfer window is another sign of the problems within the club.

"It is like watching Supermarket Sweep."
