Jamie Carragher claims Tottenham have gone backwards under Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has taken Tottenham backwards according to Jamie Carragher who reckons they were far closer to winning things under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Special One replaced the Argentine earlier this season after a poor run of form that dated back to the last campaign.

But before Tottenham's demise under Pochettino they came to within 90 minutes of winning the Champions League.

That came after several near misses in the Premier League as well as two semi-final appearances in the FA Cup.

Carragher reckons Pochettino was "one or two" players from making Tottenham genuine challengers, but believes that number has gone up since Mourinho took over.

He told Sky Sports : "Pochettino was one or two players away I think from winning the league.

"Jose Mourinho needs four or five players just to get back to where Pochettino was."

In part, that is down to a squad overhaul that was needed in the summer - something Pochettino pushed for before he was sacked.

The north Londoners have several players in the final months of their current deals - Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen can leave for free in the summer.

While other players are linked with moves away due to Tottenham's downward spiral which could yet see them miss out on Champions League football.

Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Danny Rose are all linked with moves elsewhere as they look to legitimise their talents by winning some silverware.

Mourinho will no doubt be backed in the transfer market with Gedson Fernandes set to sign on an 18-month loan deal in the coming days .

He may also eye a striker with Kane set to be absent for several months thanks to a hamstring injury he sustained in their defeat at Southampton .
