Jamie Carragher changes Man City award prediction after Ilkay Gundogan performances

Jamie Carragher has changed his prediction regarding which Manchester City star will win the PFA Player of the Year award.

The former Liverpool defender previously tipped Ruben Dias to claim the gong thanks to the impact the summer signing has had on Pep Guardiola's defence.

Yet, after Ilkay Gundogan continued his good form with another standout performance in City's 3-0 win over Spurs on Saturday evening, Carragher changed his mind, also referencing the midfielder's performance at Anfield last weekend.

He said on Sky Sports: "This guy here, on the back of his performance at Anfield and this one and where City are now, I think he’s going to be PFA Player of the Year.

"I made a shout for the centre-back, but his goals this season... Dias has come in at centre-back and all of the clean sheets they’ve got, I think they’re the two big reasons this team are going to win the Premier League."

Writing in the Telegraph, Carragher previously said Dias was a frontrunner for the award, comparing his impact to that of Virgil van Dijk's at Liverpool.

He said: "Manchester City’s Ruben Dias may be on the verge of joining the elite group of centre-halves named Player of the Year.

"The strikers usually get the glory. Based on the criteria the award should go to someone who has had the single biggest impact on the destiny of the Premier League title. That makes Dias the current frontrunner.

"Should City win their third title of the Pep Guardiola era - and it is difficult to see who will stop them - it will be a triumph built upon their defence.

"Good centre-backs can make everyone around them look better. Just as there was a period when it did not seem to matter who Jurgen Klopp played alongside Van Dijk, Guardiola now has the same luxury with Dias.

"That is not intended to downplay the renaissance of John Stones. He too deserves much of the applause for City’s improved numbers.

"But when you watch the pair together, it is difficult to believe who is aged 23, and which of them is 27. For a young player, Dias’ qualities as an organiser are especially impressive. Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko have also flourished since Dias joined."
