Jamie Carragher can't resist dig at Gary Neville after Liverpool's Champions League glory

Jamie Carragher couldn't resist aiming a dig at former Manchester United defender Gary Neville following Liverpool's Champions League win.

The Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Madrid final on Saturday night, with Mohamed Salah opening the scoring from the penalty spot before Divock Origi added a second late on.

It was the sixth time Liverpool have won the European competition and manager Jurgen Klopp's first piece of silverware since taking charge at Anfield in 2015.

Carragher, who made over 700 appearances for the Merseyside club as a player, was understandably delighted to see his old team lift the famous trophy and could not help poking fun at the fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville on social media.

Following the match, the retired Reds centre-back shared a screenshot of a Sky Sports article from March titled, "Liverpool should forget about Champions League, says Gary Neville."

Carragher, who tagged the former United man in the post, accompanied the photo with several crying-laughing and trophy emojis.

The article in question was based on an opinion from the former Manchester United defender after the first leg of Liverpool's last 16 match against Bayern Munich.

That game saw the Klopp's side held to a 0-0 draw at Anfield and Neville suggested that Liverpool should go out of Europe in order to concentrate on their Premier League campaign, which saw them engaged in an epic contest with eventual champions Manchester City .

In the piece, Neville was quoted as saying on the Gary Neville Podcast : "I'm going to say it: go out against Bayern Munich. That sounds like madness.

"Of course, you'd never play to lose a game but it will be in Liverpool's favour if they have a clean run as they can get everyone fresh. City have got a couple of FA Cup games, where Liverpool could go five or six points in front. That's tough to pull back in the closing weeks."

The Reds went on to earn a sensational 3-1 win in Germany and later beat Spanish champions Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Spurs in the Madrid showpiece.

After seeing his side clinch the trophy, an emotional “Klopp said: “I am so happy for the boys, I’m so happy for all of these people, I’m so happy for my family.

"Did you ever see a team like this? Fighting with no fuel in the tank anymore.

“Tonight this is going to be great. This may be the best night of my life, professional wise.

“This is so important. We have our owners who never put pressure on us, they only support and say ‘you can deliver this’. They are brilliant.”
