Jamie Carragher calls on Premier League to act after major UEFA decision that will affect Liverpool

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has called on the Premier League to declare sporting merit will be determined to complete the season - even if games are unable to be played.

The top flight has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak, with clubs having agreed to resume the campaign once it is safe to do so.

With 92 fixtures outstanding, the Premier League have reportedly slated June 8 as a possible return to action, although that would be dependent on being given the green light by the government.

UEFA are keen for domestic leagues to be concluded by early August, and this week stated they would allow teams into the Champions League and Europa League if their qualification was determined on sporting merit, irrespective of the season being concluded in the normal manner.

Liverpool, who have already secured a Champions League berth, are 25 points clear at the Premier League summit and need only two wins from their remaining nine games to clinch the title for the first time since 1990.

And Carragher, while addressing reports the German Bundesliga are planning to restart next month, believes the Premier League should echo UEFA's sentiments and begin assessing options of how to best conclude the season on sporting merit.

"A lot of people are giving reasons why football can't start," he said. "The Bundesliga, another huge league, they are ahead of us and how their government have dealt with the situation that they're in.

"So they're always going to be a month or so ahead of us.

"But it does put a spring in the step of those who want football to return.

"I actually think what UEFA came out with yesterday about Champions League places and European qualification being decided on sporting merit, I'd actually love the Premier League to come out and say that."

Despite the collective desire from clubs to look to resume the season, there are a number of high-profile figures - including those at struggling London duo West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur - who want the campaign cancelled entirely.

UEFA's statement this week makes that an extremely unlikely course of action.

And Carragher, speaking on the Sky Sports' The Football Show, added: "I do feel there are a few teams, certainly down the bottom, who are not shy in coming out at times and saying why the season shouldn't continue and it should be null and void and should be curtailed.

"I still believe the league should be decided on sporting merit, whether that's title winners, European qualification or relegation.

"If we don't finish the games, as UEFA said yesterday then it should be on sporting merit.

"How they work that out, that's up for debate. But there should still be teams coming up to the Premier League next season and there should be teams going down.

"If the Premier League came out and said that, a lot more people in the game would look for ways how we can somehow get the season finished."
