Jamie Carragher calls on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make Man Utd captaincy decision

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has offered a single piece of advice to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer : Make Harry Maguire captain.

The Old Trafford club welcome Arsenal on Monday as they look to move on from a week that saw them lose at West Ham in the Premier League , before needing penalties to get past League One side Rochdale in the Carabao Cup .

Even with the season less than two months old, there have been calls for Solskjaer to go.

The Norwegian has overseen just two wins from six league games this term and pressure continues to rise.

The 46-year-old will want to turn things around quickly and Carragher believes that naming £80million centre-back Maguire as skipper would help achieve that.

"He [Ole] should take a firm decision by immediately appointing Harry Maguire captain," wrote the former England international in his column for The Telegraph.

"He can be empowered to take such big decisions by his popularity.

"Such is the admiration for Solskjaer, when [executive vice-chairman Ed] Woodward announced this week he will be given time there was no outpouring of discontent from United’s fans as they believe the bigger problems lie elsewhere within the club."

Maguire only arrived at Old Trafford in the summer after joining from divisional rivals Leicester for £80million - a world record fee for a defender.

The 26-year-old has started every league game for United so far this term, helping Solskjaer's men keep clean sheets against both Chelsea and his old club the Foxes.

Though it is believed United signed Maguire in part for his leadership credentials, it would be some rise for the 26-year-old to become captain after only becoming a Red Devil this summer.

Ashley Young was named United captain following the departure of Antonio Valencia earlier this year, with David De Gea leading the side in the Englishman's absence.
