Jamie Carragher believes now is not the time for clubs from the Championship to break away from the EFL and create a new "Premier League 2".
According to a report in a national newspaper, League One and League Two clubs are fearful that Championship sides will breakaway to form a Premier League 2 if they curtail their season.
The campaign is currently suspended, with Nottingham Forest fifth in the table - in a play-off spot - and with nine fixtures remaining.
It is hoped that the season can be completed, though there is some opposition to that, from the likes of Hull City.
This is not the first time the idea of a breakaway league has been mooted, as 15 Championship clubs signed a letter to the EFL board last season threatening to go their own way during a row over the new broadcasting contract, led by Derby County owner Mel Morris.
While Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has also previously spoken of his desire to create Premier League 2, a concept believed to be supported by other leading clubs in the Championship.
But Carragher believes that clubs should be looking to come together and work together at this moment in time, and not looking to create a breakaway league.
“I don’t think this is the time for leagues to be leaving one another and splitting up," the former Liverpool defender told The Football Show on Sky Sports.
"This is a time if possible to try and come together.
“We have said for so long on this show when talking about the Premier League more often than not, about self-interest, and of course there is self-interest in every league up and down this country in terms of what leagues should do.
“Should leagues stop now, points per game or whether they should carry on. Everyone has got their own self-interest. But in terms of football clubs and financially and keeping clubs going everyone should be looking to come together.
“I wouldn’t like to see the Championship actually move away and make a Premier League 2.
"I know there has been a lot of noises in the past from the Leeds owner and maybe West Brom as well, and try and align themselves more with the Premier League.
“But that again would just be financial. I think at times they have had maybe issues with Sky as well over TV right and how many games are played and the money how it is divided up and different things like that.
“I certainly don’t think it is the time for the Championship to be leaving the EFL.”
