Jamie Carragher blasts Liverpool's Dejan Lovren for always trying to "fight everyone"

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Dejan Lovren, saying the Liverpool defender always "wants to fight everyone he plays against".

Lovren has been in and out of the first team this season, and most recently featured for the Reds in their only defeat of the Premier League campaign against Watford.

The Croatian was bullied by Hornets striker Troy Deeney for large spells of the match, which Watford won 3-0, and heavily criticised afterwards.

Slamming Lovren for failing to learn how to adapt to defending against different strikers, Carragher told the Maych X Pajak Podcast: "I've watched Lovren in a Liverpool shirt for so long making the same mistake. He wants to fight everyone he plays against.

"Harry Kane started this season and stands on Lovren, just uses his body and knocks him out the way. He's 28, he should have learnt by now. There's no problem letting Deeney bring the ball down."

Deeney spoke out about Lovren following Watford's win over Liverpool in February, in which he admitted he targeted the centre-back as a 'weak leak'.

"[Virgil] van Dijk is a class act and, for me, is probably in the top five defenders in the world," Deeney told Sky Sports.

"It is tough to get anything from him; he is 6ft 6ins, fast and strong, so you try to pick on the weaker of the two.

"I don't want to be disrespectful to Lovren and say he is the weaker of the two but I knew he wanted to fight me as well, and that is my game, so if you want to try and fight me you are going to have to be in for a tough night.

"He did that for the first goal, trying to fight me for the throw-in and then I obviously rolled him and we scored. He is trying to fight me instead of watching the ball and we scored."
