Jamie Carragher asks for extra birthday present for Liverpool after Spurs win

Jamie Carragher has cheekily asked Liverpool for a new centre-back as a birthday present after injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip.

The Reds' injury crisis at the back deepened when Fabinho was ruled out of Thursday's victory over Spurs with what was described as a minor muscle injury before Matip was replaced at half-time.

With long-term injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, the Reds could well be without an experienced centre-back for Sunday's game against West Ham.

The injuries has led to fans calling for the club to reverse their stance on not signing a new centre-back this month and Carragher agrees.

It was the Liverpool legend's 43rd birthday on Thursday and the club wished him happy birthday on social media.

Replying pre-match, Carragher said: "Three points as a present would be lovely, admin!"

After the Reds recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Spurs, getting back to form in emphatic style, Carragher thanked the club but joked he wanted more for his birthday.

"I knew you wouldn't let me down admin," he followed up. "You couldn't throw in a centre-back as well could you?

"I know but if you don't ask you don't get!"

Writing in his Telegraph column last week, Carragher said it was an oversight for the Reds to have not lined p a centre-back as soon as VanDijk suffered his injury.

He said: "I believe the club’s response should have been activated on October 19, the day Virgil van Dijk’s cruciate knee operation was confirmed.

"Hindsight is unnecessary. I said then I did not think Liverpool could win the league unless they had a new centre-back in place on January 1. They needed one before Joe Gomez was injured. His and Joel Matip’s appearance record was informative of that.

"Frankly, it is preposterous that three months on and with the transfer window now open, Klopp felt compelled to use Jordan Henderson in the position against Manchester United.

"And although Fabinho has been outstanding, he would be more influential in midfield. It has caused a chain reaction throughout the team.

"Maybe the club thought Klopp is so good he can overcome any situation. If so, the last few weeks are a reality check for them."
