Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on West Ham's Declan Rice amid Chelsea transfer links

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

The Telegraph have claimed that the 22-year-old has become 'unhappy' with the £100million price tag that the Hammers have placed on his head, leading to suggestions he could move back to Stamford Bridge, where he spent eight years before being released as a youngster.

Rice has admitted that he prefers to be deployed as a box-to-box midfielder rather than a deep-lying No.6.

And ahead of West Ham's convincing 4-1 win over Leicester City, Carragher agreed with Rice, claiming that the Englishman's passing ability is underrated by many.

"With Declan Rice, I think his passing is undervalued. In a game against Leicester last season, he drove from deep and hit the crossbar, it was almost as if it was a demonstration of what he wants to become", Carragher told Sky Sports.

"He’s got the power and he runs through midfield. I think he wants to be seen as more of an all-round player.”

However, Carragher's fellow pundit Neville disagrees, arguing that he doesn't have the facilities to become proficient in the final third.

Neville said: “He scored two goals last season, one was a penalty, and he got one assist so he’s not an attacking midfield player. He is predominantly going to be breaking it up.

"As a player, as a character, he’s fantastic. I just look at him sometimes and think ‘can he be a fantastic, top-class centre-back?’ Do I think in midfield that he’s a specialist in defending or a specialist in attack?

"I think he’s a very good player, very good midfield player and a lot of clubs would want him but Ndidi is a specialist. Rice wants to go forward but he got one assist last season, two goals, one is a penalty, so my doubt is his position.

"He’s going to be a midfield player but what type of midfield player is he going to be? I’m not quite sure he’s got the real top level ability to do that.”
