Jamie Carragher aims Sir Alex Ferguson dig at Manchester United legend Gary Neville

Jamie Carragher has aimed a dig at Gary Neville in his congratulatory message to Salford City over their EFL Trophy win.

The Ammies won the trophy on Saturday evening with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Portsmouth, with co-owners Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all in attendance.

It was Salford's first tournament win as an EFL club, beating the League one side after a goalless draw.

Carragher was commentating on Everton against Burnley for Sky at the time and could not resist a dig at his colleague Neville over the victory, referencing Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

He quipped: "That's the first trophy he's won without Sir Alex Ferguson, well done."

The trophy was won in strange circumstances, with the final actually delayed from last season due to the coronavirus lockdown 12 months ago meaning the game could not be played until now.

With this season's final set to take place between Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers on Sunday, it was also playfully pointed out that Salford would only be holders of the competition for a day.

Speaking about the victory post-match, Ammies boss Richie Wellens said he hoped it could act as a springboard for future successes.

"I spoke before about this game being a hindrance, it can get misinterpreted," Wellens said.

"It was the timing of the game but it may have been a godsend because we are hoping to see it as a springboard now.

"The players now should take a hell of a lot of confidence and we should use the momentum for Colchester on Tuesday, we don't want a Lord Mayor’s show, and then kick on for the remainder of the season."
