Jamie Carragher agrees as former Premier League referee explains Sadio Mane Liverpool incident

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has backed the decision not to send off Sadio Mane during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds winger was booked seconds into the clash at Stamford Bridge after his elbow appeared to catch Cesar Azpilicueta during an aerial challenge.

Many felt Anthony Taylor only chose to book Mane because the incident occurred so early in the game, the fact the 29-year-old then proceeded to open the scoring in west London only added to the sense of injustice amongst the home supporters.

However, Gallagher insists that cautioning the Senegal star was the correct decision.

“I personally think it’s a yellow card," he told Sky Sports .

“It’s not a wise challenge but he leads with his forearm, I think he’s using that as leverage to get off the ground.

“I don’t think he throws it as a weapon, certainly doesn’t hit him with the elbow.

“He does catch him with a forearm, the ball is in the air for both players to challenge.

“If you look at Mane he’s always looking in the air, he doesn’t size up Azpilicueta and think ‘right I know you’re there I’m going to hit you with full force’

“All in all I would say yellow card.”

Jamie Carragher agreed with Gallagher's verdict, sharing the clip on Instagram and posting 'exactly' underneath.

The draw left Liverpool 11 points behind league leaders Manchester City, but they do have a game in hand.

Next up for the Reds is a trip to Arsenal for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi final on Thursday.
