Jamie Carragher admits "superstar" Mo Salah has been let down by Liverpool team-mates

Mohamed Salah was let down by some of his Liverpool team-mates last season, according to Jamie Carragher.

Salah grabbed the headlines with a brilliant performance in Liverpool ’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

After a sloppy first-half display from the hosts, the Egyptian forward provided the quality to put his side ahead, breaking free down the right wing to set up Sadio Mane to finish.

Phil Foden rifled in Man City’s equaliser before Salah produced a wonderful jinking run and powerful strike to make it 2-1.

Kevin De Bruyne earned City a point with a deflected effort, but the post-match discussion was dominated by Salah, who now has nine goals in nine games this season.

The 29-year-old contributed 22 goals and five assists in the Premier League last season as Liverpool finished third and Carragher was full of praise for his consistency on Sunday.

“When’s he ever not been on fire? This guy, he's an absolute superstar right now you could argue he’s the best player in the Premier League right now with the form he’s actually in,” the former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports .

“He’s been electric. At times last season he was almost let down, if you like, by the rest of that famous front three but he’s never, ever dropped those standards.

“And at this moment, in the situation when he’s got less than two years left on his contract, it’s just unthinkable he won’t be playing for Liverpool in the next 18 months. I think he wants Kevin De Bruyne money.”

Salah scored 31 goals across all competitions last season, considerably more than fellow forwards Mane (16), Diogo Jota (13) and Roberto Firmino (nine).

The Egyptian is currently under contract until June 2023 and Liverpool are yet to strike an agreement with him over a new deal.

His brilliant form this season - he has scored in all but one game so far - is sure to strengthen his negotiating position.

While De Bruyne signed a five-year deal worth £385,000 a week at Man City in April, Salah has not been handed improved terms since 2018.

Mirror Sport exclusively reported last month he is seeking a contract worth £500,000 per week.

Talks are continuing between the club and Salah’s representatives, but the fact Virgil van Dijk is currently the club's top earner on £220,000 per week means a compromise might be hard to find.

Micah Richards spent time with Salah at Fiorentina when both players were on loan with the Italian side in the second half of the 2014/15 season and he has been surprised Liverpool haven’t struck an agreement yet.

“I remember when I was at Fiorentina how much he was saying he loved Liverpool,” Richards said.

“I expected him to have already signed [an extension with Liverpool].”
