Jamie Carragher admits he would love to see Matthijs De Ligt make Liverpool transfer

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits he would love to see Jurgen Klopp sign Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt this summer.

The teenager has shot to prominence in Amsterdam, establishing a reputation as one of the world's best young centre-backs since breaking into the Ajax team three years ago.

De Ligt skippered the Eredivisie side to a Champions League semi-final this term and the Dutch outfit were seconds away from a clash with Liverpool in the final before Lucas Moura struck a last-gasp winner for Tottenham on Wednesday.

Ajax have all but conceded that Matthijs De Ligt could be heading the Premier League as Ajax make transfer admission from the Johan Cruyff ArenA following Frenkie De Jong's agreement to join Barcelona this summer.

Carragher , who made 737 appearances across a decorated career with the Reds, sees De Ligt as one of Europe's finest young centre-backs.

The iconic former Reds defender thinks he would be an excellent addition to Liverpool's squad next season.

Tottenham star a doubt for Champions League final against Liverpool after leaving Ajax on crutches

Asked if he would like to see De Ligt at Anfield, Carragher said: "I'd love that!

"I have never seen such a good defender at 19 years old. He plays as if he's 29 and at his peak already.

"You can only imagine how good he will be when he actually is 29."

A stumbling block for any potential move however would be Ajax's asking price with De Ligt rated at around £60million.

The Reds are unlikely to be paying out big sums on transfers this summer as Klopp seeks to merely fine tune a team that could enter into next season as European champions.

Speaking earlier this year, De Ligt admitted that he would like the chance to play alongside international defensive partner Virgil van Dijk at club level.

"Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues,"  he said in a video on Goal.com.

"Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.

"It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them.

"I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up."

Liverpool have a chance to secure a 19th league title and their first in 29 years when they host Wolves on Sunday but need Brighton to take at least a point off current leaders Manchester City.
