Jamie Carragher addresses Trent Alexander-Arnold response to Gary Neville dig

Jamie Carragher couldn't resist getting involved after Trent Alexander-Arnold addressed a famous dig at Gary Neville.

Alexander-Arnold was speaking to BT Sport when he discussed how the position of full-back is evolving in the modern era.

"We want to change the way the position was previously thought about," the Liverpool defender said.

"There was the famous saying 'nobody wants to grow up to be a Gary Neville'.

"But we want to change that and bring a different way of thinking of a full-back."

That saying was first coined by Anfield legend Carragher during one of many Monday Night Football run-ins with Sky Sports colleague Neville.

Carragher first used the jibe towards his rival Neville in 2013 as they discussed players eventually dropping into the defensive positions.

He piped up again on social media after Alexander-Arnold's reference, with another take on the saying.

Asked for his thoughts on the phrase, the Liverpool legend insisted: "Phil did", in a dig at Gary's brother, who played alongside him at Old Trafford.

Alexander-Arnold continued his remarkable season on Thursday night as Liverpool went further clear at the top of the table.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane meant Liverpool had gone an entire calendar year without losing in the Premier League.

But the England defender insists they are not getting carried away.

He said: "We know we are a top side so we are full confidence at the minute but there is a long way to go.

"We are still learning on how to control games. We are proud of how we are playing and what we have done.

"We have passed the halfway mark of the season and there are no titles given out in January."
