Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has labelled the statement issued by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley regarding pay-per-view matches as 'laughable'.
The controversial Magpies boss issued a statement on Monday evening calling for the £14.95 fee per match to be reduced to a lower figure of £4.95.
Viewing figures for the Premier League's pay-per-view matches are slim, with Liverpool fans among the many to boycott games and donating to local food banks instead.
While Carragher agrees with Ashley's comments, he addressed the fact that season ticket holders at Newcastle have not been refunded and pointed out the irony of his statement.
“I think it's laughable that it's Mike Ashley who's come out and said that - I think he's still taking season ticket money off Newcastle fans," he told Sky Sports.
“For Mike Ashley to come out and say it, and I do agree with his comments, it shows how messed up it is.
"£14.95 has gone down like a lead balloon and I'm sure it will change.”
Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday was amongst the recent pay-per-view billings but fans boycotted the match, raising over £100,000 for food banks as a result.
It was estimated 110,000 people did pay to watch the match but those figures are significantly lower than what would be expected.
Premier League clubs are due to discuss changes to the pay-per-view plans on Thursday, where it could be scrapped entirely after a failed trial period.
