'Jamie and Claire are troublemakers' Outlander fans reveal some of their unpopular opinions about the show

There's no denying Outlander is one of the most popular TV shows in the world right now, with legions of fans across the globe tuning in to enjoy the adventures of Jamie, Claire, and the Fraser's Ridge Clan.

With a sixth season on the way and a seventh already confirmed, the show continues to go from strength to strength - and there are even rumours of a possible spin-off.

However, it seems that not every fan is delighted by all of the aspects of the show.

A thread on social media site Reddit recently asked fans what their unpopular opinions on Outlander were and you might be surprised (and possibly even agree) with some of the results.

The post by u/awkwardOttakam asked: "Can you share any of your unpopular opinions about the show or its characters?"

*Warning - MAJOR spoilers for the show ahead

8. Jamie and Claire are troublemakers

Outlander season six is on its way but fans have been sharing their unpopular opinions on the show (Starz)

Kicking things off themselves, u/awkwardOttakam added: "Jaime and Claire are symbols of true love and what not but they are sickly unlucky for each other and just take turns to cause trouble for the other (unintentionally of course, but trouble nevertheless)."

They added that the pair keep claiming they want a quiet life but "literally go on adventures just seeking trouble" when they could just lay low and "live a peaceful life".

Although it is hard to argue, it's possible we wouldn't have a show or books to enjoy if they did.

7. It’s just a glorified soap opera

u/timmaeus wasn't holding back, stating: "It’s a soap opera with a historical and light speculative (fantasy) fiction theme.

"There, I said it."

Surprisingly, more than a few fans agreed.

6. Frank deserved much better

#TeamFrank believe Frank deserved better (Starz)

Another popular point is that Frank (Tobias Menzies) deserved much better than just being treated as an impediment to Claire and Jamie's love story.

One #TeamFrank fan wrote: "Claire should have stayed with Frank and actually tried to make the marriage work. She kept saying they could make it work, but never actually tried.

"She was very selfish and did not deserve a great guy like Frank."

5. Claire and Jamie are not nice people

u/missm0011 posted: "I think Claire and Jamie are kind of a******s. I mean they constantly lie to people, use people, and put them in danger. They love each other and will do anything for each other, but if your name isn't Claire or Jamie you are [out of luck]."

While another poster added: "I don't think I would like to be Claire's friend. She's the type of person where everything always happens to her or has to be about her."

Other posters stated that they are also a "bit tired" of Claire running off and getting herself in trouble.

Though many agreed with the statements about Claire, others were willing to forgive Jamie due to the fact that most of the questionable things he did were in pursuit of his love of Claire.

4. The actress who plays Brianna isn't great and the character is 'boring'

Roger and Brianna also copped some flack (Starz)

Actress Sophie Skelton and her character Brianna both seemed to be in the firing line, with fans describing her line delivery as being "very one-note" and stating that she doesn't seem to inhabit the character.

Others questioned her accent, adding that her portrayal was "bland".

One poster wrote: "I think a big problem with Brianna has to do with the fact that Sophie is putting on the American accent.

"All of her effort is going into saying her lines with the accent, but the result is that her lines are missing the necessary tones and inflections to properly convey her emotions, which are a very important part of this story."

The character of Brianna was also described as "unlikable", "unbelievable" and even "boring".

3. Roger is not a good person

Though Roger is considered a fan favourite, many of the bigger posts revolved around him.

Though most praised Richard Rankin as a "brilliant actor", one fan added that the scripts for Roger "did no one any favours".

Others pointed out that the chemistry between Roger and Bree was practically non-existent, with some going as far as to call Roger a "misogynistic ass".

One person added that when they first meet, he comes off as a "real jerk".

"Some of [my] friends think Roger McKenzie is romantic," wrote another. "I hate him, I hate how Brianna has to be a virgin (like wtf) and has to marry him before having sex, and basically [he] wants to control her, not cool".

Another agreed that he is not only controlling but also "condescending" toward Bree, adding that he almost abandons her and the child after he finds out she’s been raped.

The way he is written in the show did not score highly with fans it seems.

2. Murtagh should have stayed dead

Murtagh returning was not a popular idea for some (Starz)

Another gripe was that of a major change from the book, that of the fate of Murtagh.

Though he dies at Culloden in the books, in the show he proved to be such a fan favourite, that he was brought back and enjoys a surprise return at Ardmuir Prison.

One fan posted: "Murtagh being alive totally changed Jamie's Ardsmuir story, and not for the better."

While another added: "Agree on Murtagh...(loved him). To me personally, in the books, he was kinda there as Jamies' protector, and I think it was a symbolic thing where once he died [that] Jamie was now on his own."

But we believe that if he didn't return then we wouldn't have gotten that incredibly emotional scene at the battle of Alamance.

1. Jamie and Claire should not have been apart for 20 years

A major bone of contention for fans was the 20-year gap between Jamie and Claire meeting again, with people describing it as confusing.

One person wrote: "It's extremely jarring to go from them being young lovers in their primes in season two to middle-aged strangers (or let's face it - 'elderly' folks by 18th century standards).

"And it's even more disconcerting onscreen when Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe don't look a day over 35. They have different hairdos...but faces that haven't experienced the effects of gravity, or rough living (in Jamie's case)."

Most agreed that it should have been much shorter, as it creates a lot of "mental obstacles for the audience to overcome".

This is one we definitely agree with.
