Jamia Millia Islamia adopts CUET for 8 of 59 undergraduate courses

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to adopt the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admitting students to eight of its 59 undergraduate programmes for the 2022-23 academic session.

The CUET programmes are BA (H) history, economics, Hindi, Sanskrit, French and francophone studies, Spanish and Latin American studies, BSc biotechnology and BVoc solar energy, Jamia announced on Monday. The 59 programmes include engineering and dental (BDS) courses for which admissions will continue to take place through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), respectively. For the remaining courses, Jamia will hold its own entrance.

Being a minority institution, Jamia has its own admission process. However, University Grants Commission recently clarified that all central universities, including minority institutions, should adopt CUET from this year. Other minority institutions in the city, such as St Stephen’s College of Delhi University, is yet to make any announcement.

According to the Jamia notification, “It has been decided in a meeting attended by the top officials of the university that admissions for selected undergraduate courses will be done through CUET. The university has communicated to University Grants Commission and National Testing Agency about the same.”

How the CUET score will be calculated for the university is yet to be released, but Jamia has specified the minimum eligibility criteria. For the eight CUET courses, the minimum eligibility is not less than 50% marks in aggregate or in specific subjects. For economics and Hindi, it is 50% marks in aggregate of best five papers. For BSc biotechnology, the eligibility is 50% marks in each science subject — physics, chemistry and biology/mathematics. BVoc solar energy requires a candidate to have passed Class XII with 50% marks and studied physics and mathematics.

The candidates for these eight courses should fill the online forms of both CUET and Jamia. “Students are advised to follow the university website for updates regarding courses and other details. BTech aspirants are required to fill the JEE form as well as that of Jamia,” the university stated.
