A talented Jamestown photographer has been shortlisted for a prestigious Guild of Photographers award.
Katie Hughes has been nominated for Guild of Photographer’s Image of the Year award, for her submission in the creative and digital art category.
More than 13,000 entries were received during 2021 from some of the world’s most gifted photographers, with Katie’s one of just 10 to be shortlisted.
Explaining more about her striking work, Katie said: “This is an image I made from playing with smoke from an incense stick.
“When I looked at all my images I noticed that some shapes looked like a face and hair etc. It got me thinking about putting all the pieces together and the end result was a woman who looked like she was dancing.

“I joined the Guild of Photographers almost two years ago. They have a monthly competition called image of the month where you enter your images and professional photographers from around the world judge your work. When I entered this image I won a silver for it.”
From all the entries across the year, the Guild’s judges selected just 10 in various genres to go forward to the annual Image of the Year final.
Guild director Lesley Thirsk said “One of the Guild’s aims is to drive standards and creativity amongst photographers.
“Our competition certainly does that, for the standard of the entries we see each month is quite staggering.
“To have an image recognised by the Guild in the monthly competition is difficult enough, so to have an image selected as being one of the best in a category for the end of year finale is without doubt an incredible achievement, and shows just how talented a photographer, Katie is.”

Katie continued: “I love photography and put a lot of effort into developing my skills.
“One way I do that is to enter the Guild’s competition.
“It drives forward photography standards month after month, so it helps me push myself.
“The images I see getting awards each month are inspirational, so knowing just how high those standards are, to have one of my images shortlisted for the overall final from the many thousands submitted across the whole year is really exciting. I couldn’t believe it when I found out.”
This month judges will gather to decide on the overall winner, with the results set to be announced in early February.
