James Wilson offered Aberdeen contract but Sunderland and Preston are also eyeing Man United striker

Aberdeen have made an offer to James Wilson and are now waiting to see if it will be enough to entice him back to Pittodrie.

The striker spent last season on loan with the Dons and will be released by Manchester United at the end of the month.

The 23-year-old has just returned from holiday and is considering the deal Derek McInnes has tabled.

The frontman also has interest from a number of English clubs, including Preston and Sunderland, along with several options in America’s Major League Soccer.

Wilson will need to take a massive hit on what he is currently earning at Old Trafford but McInnes is hoping the he will forgo that to take the chance to get his career back on track.

The talented Englishman was tipped for big things under Louis Van Gaal at United and was rewarded with a big-money contract.

A combination of injury and the burden of expectation weighed heavily on Wilson and his career has stalled despite several loan spells at Brighton, Derby and Sheffield United.

He moved to Aberdeen last year and also found it a struggle although he did show flashes of brilliance and at the end of the season really looked to be hitting form.

McInnes also wants land Dylan McGeouch (SNS Group)

Reds boss McInnes is hoping for a quick answer so he if Wilson does return he will be in the squad for the Europa League opener with RoPS a week on Thursday.

Aberdeen are also looking to add a midfielder before that game with Sunderland’s Dylan McGeouch one of his top options.

The Dons will sign off their Cork training camp with a friendly against Connah Quay Nomads today.

The Welsh side, who were involved in a fiery encounter with Ross County last summer, will travel across for the game as they continue their own Europa League preparations for their game with Kilmarnock.

McInnes said: “I’ve not gone into any depth about them but I know they played against Ross County and I’ve heard of Andy Morrison, their manager.

“We were keen to play an Irish game but Cork’s game was moved to the Friday and they are playing again on Monday. Connah’s Quay approached us but we said we were over here in Ireland. They said they were willing to come over and play so it’s worked out well.

“A few people have told me they are physical but hopefully they see the game as a training game and an extension of their preparations.

“We certainly do.”
