James Wilson insists Aberdeen redemption bid is worth more than Man United megabucks

James Wilson has revealed he’s put his career before cash by moving to Aberdeen to get back on track.

The 23-year-old, who was on loan at Pittodrie last season, has signed a two-year deal with the Dons after his release by Manchester United.

It brings a end to big paydays for Wilson at Old Trafford where he came through the ranks and was handed a bumper £30,000-a-week deal by Louis van Gaal in 2014.

The talented striker has seen his career spiral due to injury and lack of form but has taken a chance because he feels he can get back to his best under the guidance of Derek McInnes.

Wilson, who was in the squad at Peterhead last night, said: “There is a lot of money in football and it can be deciding factor in some cases.

“But at this point, a big thing was about being content, happy and comfortable and ready to work for the team I have been integrated into.

“The main reason I came back is the group of players are brilliant and I enjoyed working with the coaching staff.

“I had offers but it’s a fairly easy decision to make based on the memories I have already made. I just want to build on them.”

Wilson was impressed by McInnes’ perseverance in getting him back.

He said: “We spoke quite a bit over the last few weeks.

“At the end of last season he said he would be keen to get me back. It’s good to feel important and in his plans.”

Wilson will get his first taste of European football with Aberdeen and has signed before the deadline for Thursday’s clash with Finnish side RoPS.

And the forward revealed his big ambition is to win silverware with the Dons next season.

Wilson said: “We worked so hard last year to get there. I’m looking to build on that and be involved.

“It would be good to get my hands on silverware and a medal. It’s going to be a good season.”
