A man shot by police in South Shields has died of his injuries.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said 24-year-old James Wilson died in hospital late on Friday night.

He had been shot in the early hours of Tuesday morning following reports he was seen with a handgun.

Carl Gumsley, Commissioner of the IPCC, said: “Our thoughts are with James’ friends and family at this very difficult time.”

The watchdog's investigation into the shooting continues.

Mr Wilson, also known as Cornet, was believed to have been shot once in the chest.
