James Tennyson targeting big fights as he prepares for Belfast return

James Tennyson is targeting big fights in 2019 as he prepares for his eagerly anticipated ring return.

'The Assassin' dismantled Garry Neale inside two rounds back in February as he made an impressive move up to Lightweight.

He was due to return the following month in Dublin but had to withdraw with an injury .

Tennyson fought for a world title last year but lost out to the classy Tevin Farmer in Boston.

The 25-year-old is now preparing for his latest test against Nicaraguan Brayan Mairena on the Mark Dunlop 'Summer Brawl' show at the Europa Hotel this Saturday, May 18.

"When you fight for a world title, you want more," Tennyson said.

How Paddy Barnes helped Tommy McCarthy get back on track following Riakporhe defeat

"That is the pinnacle in boxing and every fighter wants the chance to win a world title.

"I am no different. I am still young and still very hungry to get back to that level again. I just have to keep beating the opponents standing in front of me and then everything else will look after itself.

"I learned so much that night against Farmer. And I want to put that experience to good use."

Tennyson added:  “I want a win at the Europa Hotel against Brayan Mairena and then start getting involved in big fights again before the end of this year.

“I would love a shot at the British title which is held by Joe Cordina.

"There are big fights out there for me so I am excited at what the future holds."

James Tennyson confirms plans to fight at lightweight after vacating titles

Promoter Dunlop is confident his man can once again scale the heights.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's big show in Belfast, he said: “It's really hard to believe James is still only 25, he has achieved already what 99.9% of professional boxers never achieve and he is only getting warmed up.

“Facts are facts and he has done it the hard way earning great experience.”

Also on the bill are Feargal McCrory, former World Kick Boxing Champion Cathy McAleer, Belfast Cruiserweight Tommy McCarthy and Dublin’s Victor Rabei.
