James Tavernier vows to defend Rangers title until 'last breath' as he sets Champions League target

Rangers captain James Tavernier insists the squad will defend the Premiership title with their lives.

The Ibrox star returned to pre-season earlier this week and is focused on what happens when the season kicks off in four weeks with a game against Livingston at Ibrox.

Tavernier played a vital part in the title win with 12 league goals and plenty of assists but he was also disappointed with the League and Scottish Cup performances.

And he's targeting improvements in that area but promised supporters he'll do everything he can to ensure Steven Gerrard's men are lifting the Premiership trophy at the end of the season again.

It was a long decade without the title for Rangers fans and Tavernier's vow to defend it to the last breath will be music to their ears ahead of the new campaign.

He told RangersTV: "It was such a proud moment and it was an amazing season we had. We know there’s some areas we can still improve which is always good, but we thought it was a great season achieving winning the league and doing so well in the Europa but we can’t wait to improve on that with domestic cups and that’s what we want to be doing this season.

"We’re the champions and we’ve got to remain that way this season.

"It’s down to us to give every last breath, every last ounce of energy to protect that this season.

"We’ve got to do that and add even more. We’re always looking to improve and that’s what we’ll be doing in pre-season. What we’ll be doing is making ourselves better and push us forward for this season to go through Champions League qualifiers.

"The boys want to aim for the group stage and we want to do well in the league and the cups."

Tavernier admits the whole squad are desperate to reach the group stage of the Champions League and he revealed it would make a childhood dream come true.

He added: "It’s something you always dream of as a kid, when you see and hear that music when the teams are lining up so we know it’s going to be tough but Rangers on a European night is always special.

"We’ll have to wait and see who we get and prepare for that game. Hopefully we’ll have a good pre-season leading up to that."
