How Rangers plan to stop Celtic winning nine-in-a-row revealed by James Tavernier

James Tavernier insists Rangers have found the formula to halt Celtic’s charge towards nine-in-a-row.

The Ibrox captain knows this season is slipping away with the Parkhead men needing just one more point to be crowned champions.

But Tavernier believes Gers know what is required for next term after making it four wins on the spin with their 2-0 victory against Aberdeen today.

The skipper – who converted two penalties to down the Dons – said: “We have secured second place but we have been guilty of not being consistent this season.

“The last four performances have put us in a really good position for next season.

“If we can continue to apply ourselves and keep listening to the management team and the way they want us to play then we should have a really good chance.

“You have seen it in the English Premier League, Manchester City and Liverpool have been terrific all season.

“That is what it takes to win a league, you can’t have any speed bumps during a season because it will cost you.

“We need to be more consistent and make sure that doesn’t happen next season.”

Rangers managed to delay the Celtic title party by finally getting the better of Aberdeen in Glasgow thanks to Tavernier’s two second half spot kicks.

The Dons inflicted more damage than most this season with painful losses to the Pittodrie men at Hampden in both cup competitions and in the Premiership at Ibrox.

The Parkhead side head to the Granite City next week before the Old Firm collide on the south side of the city the following weekend.

Tavernier is looking to push the title race for as long as possible but he insisted his focus is on producing a strong finish and avenging some of the earlier damaging defeats.

He said: “We just need to win games. The gaffer said it was all about three points and that’s our aim until the end of the season.

“We were aware of what could happen but we are Rangers and we need to win games. We knew we had to beat Aberdeen.

“We’d lost points against them this season and they’d knocked us out of the cups. We had to win in front of our fans.

Derek McInnes claims 'biggest influence' in Rangers defeat was the referee in furious blast

“It puts us in a good position before Hibs this week. There’s been a few damaging performances this season.

“We have only picked up three points against Hibs when we felt we should have had more. It’s the same against Aberdeen.

“We had to set that record straight but we know where we need to be to challenge next season.”
