James Tavernier targeted by Motherwell fan as lighter thrown at Rangers skipper

James Tavernier has been targeted by a Motherwell fan after objects were launched onto the Fir Park pitch.

The Rangers skipper was taking a throw-in during Sunday's game against the Steelmen when a lighter and then a pie were lobbed in his direction.

It's the latest flashpoint to hit Scottish football and comes less than 24 hours after a coconut was thrown from the stands during the Hearts vs Hibs Premiership clash.

Tavernier has already suffered this season after a supporter entered the field of play against Hibs and confronted him.

Referee Nick Walsh picks up an object thrown from the crowd and hands it to police (SNS Group)

Referee Nick Walsh picked the lighter up and handed it to an officer at the side of the Fir Park pitch and there appeared to be more objects aimed at the Gers captain.

The SPFL will launch a probe into the sad scenes at Tynecastle and will almost certainly analyse the incident involving Tavernier which took place in the first half.

It's been a season to forget in Scottish football with a host of high-profile games being soured by sectarian chanting, damage to stadium and coin-throwing.
