Rangers skipper James Tavernier is hoping it's a case of 'third time's a charm' as they look to progress further in the Europa League.
The Light Blues have fallen at the last-16 hurdle - against Bayer Leverkusen and Slavia Prague - in the previous two campaigns and kick off a new journey tonight.
They welcome French giants Lyon to Ibrox for their Group A opener and the Gers captain believes they have a realistic chance of going deep into the competition under Steven Gerrard.
They've improved markedly on the continental front under the Liverpool legend and Tavernier believes it's time to target a quarter-final berth.
“It’s definitely a realistic goal," he told the Daily Record.
"We always want to set targets and to better ourselves from the previous seasons. It’s about getting out of the group stages and trying to get further.
“It’s the big nights under the lights. You come up against top teams and players – it automatically brings out the best in you. You want to compete against the best and show how good you are on that stage.
“To have a game at home in front of a full Ibrox that will be rocking, these are the games you want to play. It’s going to be a tough game but we look forward to these occasions.”
For the 29-year-old, having home advantage to start things off is crucial if Rangers are to progress from a section that also features Danish side Brondby and Czech outfit Sparta Prague.
He's calling on the Light Blues masses to make it fortress Ibrox this evening as Lyon come to town.
The right-back added: “We want to make Ibrox a fortress. We don’t want any teams coming here and taking points away from us.
“We try to get the maximum points from every single game and our record speaks for itself. We want this to be a tough place to come.
"With the fans this season, they’ll get right behind us, and hopefully we’ll get the points we need to start the group stages.”
