James Tavernier set to lose Rangers penalty duty as Steven Gerrard makes big call to fans

Steven Gerrard will consider removing James Tavernier from penalty kick duties after the Rangers skipper missed from 12 yards for the third time this season.

Tavernier struck the base of the post from 12 yards after he himself had been hauled down by Motherwell's Liam Polworth with Gers trailing 1-0 to Devante Cole's opener.

The Englishman went some way to atoning for his miss when he swung in a corner for Filip Helander to head home the winning goal for Rangers 10 minutes from time after Jermain Defoe had equalised.

But Gerrard - who called for Rangers supporters to get behind under-fire Tavernier - admitted afterwards he could now step in and remove the spot kick responsibility from his captain with Defoe or Alfredo Morelos likely to be handed that duty.

He said: "I'll consider it.

"I don't think I have to make that decision right now but it will certainly be something on my mind in the next 24 - 48 hours.

"I don't think you can doubt James' character he knows in the last couple of weeks he is in the firing line and I would like the crowd to help him more.

"Sometimes when it's tough and you're not at your best then you need your crowd to be with you rather than against you. So I plead with the crowd to stay with him because he will play through it and he can change games like did for us today.

"It was a fantastic header and a great delivery from James.

"But James needs his people now."

Meanwhile Gerrard paid Motherwell a huge compliment after watching the Steelmen push his players all the way. He reckons Stephen Robinson's side are the best team outside of Celtic to have visited Ibrox this season.

"Today we weren't at our best," said the Ibrox boss. "I think we have done ever so well to find a way to win.

"But I must pay credit and respect to Motherwell, I thought they were excellent. A lot of pace up front, a lot of direct running, players who did the basics very well.

"I think outside Celtic they are the best side to come here.

"We 100 per cent weren't at our best. I was disappointed with us. A fantastic goal from Jermain again - I thought he did very well today and it was typical Defoe sniffing out a chance.

"There was a big improvement in the second half.

"Winning ugly was definitely the case today - we got away with one."
