James Tavernier's Rangers title chase role as Alex McLeish urges captain to show 'animal' example

Former Rangers manager Alex McLeish has told James Tavernier to show his "animal" side to lead the Ibrox club to title glory.

The right-back has been in sensational form this season, with 17 goals in all competitions.

That's helped Rangers to establish a 13 point lead at the top of the Premiership, though Celtic still have two games in hand to play.

And McLeish believes the captain has to do more than maintain his own standard if a first title since 2011 is to be secured.

He told Football Pass : "It really has been a remarkable season for James.

"Last season there was a bit of criticism, of his defensive duties for instance.

"But he's overcome everything, he's defending and attacking.

"Jose Mourinho described his centre-forwards as animals last week and you could say James Tavernier is in that kind of form.

"He's in the form of his life at the moment. It's incredible energy he's got and an eye for goal as well, he's a set piece specialist and also pitching in with a few headers.

"He really has had a great season so far and he's got to insist that his team keep that up as well as the form that he's on."
