James Tavernier's Rangers form compared to Kieran Tierney displays that earned Arsenal move by ex-Ibrox star

James Tavernier’s current form is eclipsing that of Kieran Tierney before he earned a £25million move to Arsenal.

That’s according to former Rangers hero Neil McCann, who has been blown away by Tavernier ’s numbers so far this season.

The Ibrox skipper has racked up 16 goals already from right back to lead his side to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

McCann is convinced those stats will have the big boys down south taking notice.

And the ex-winger will be amazed if there aren’t clubs trying to tempt Steven Gerrard with offer next month when the transfer window opens.

"Listen, I don't want James Tavernier to leave Rangers,” he told the Daily Mail.

"I firmly believe they have a chance of winning the title, or at least a trophy this season, and he is fundamental to it but I'd be very surprised if a Premier League club does not make an approach for him in January.

"In fact I can't believe they haven't had offers for him already. To turn out statistics like he does, there can't be many full-backs in world football who can match that.

"Kieran Tierney is a terrific player and he left Celtic for £25million but he wasn't turning out the figures that Tavernier has. Whatever league you are playing in, to attain those numbers is not easy."

Tavernier has always been a source of goals and assist for Rangers, but his defending ability was regularly questioned.

But now McCann believes he’s managed to marry the two together and the result is a player who has all the tools to play at the highest level.

"The doubts have often been about his defending but that aspect has been terrific this season,” he said.

“Rangers have only conceded three in the league, they have kept 14 clean sheets out of 16 games and Tavernier has repeated that form in Europe against some quality opposition.

"Without question, he has improved under Steven Gerrard and matured with the responsibility. He doesn't need to cajole those around him, he leads by example.

"People forget the mentality required to play for the Old Firm up here. The demands, the pressure, it's on you every day of the week."
