James Tavernier pleads with Rangers fans to 'stay home' as Celtic derby faces call-off uncertainty

Captain James Tavernier has pleaded with Rangers fans to stay at home on Old Firm derby day next week.

Following large groups gathering in George Square and at Ibrox to celebrate the title victory for Steven Gerrard's side, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned the upcoming Celtic clash could be at risk.

The skipper has now sent a message to supporters in a bid to prevent a repeat of the Covid rule breaches on derby day.

The skipper urged fans to stay away from last weekend's hot spots in the city centre and watch the visit to Parkhead from home.

In a social media statement, Tavernier said: "I want to send a message for all Rangers fans. Thank you for you support over the last week.

"We have another huge week ahead, the second on Thursday the the Old Firm at Parkhead on Sunday.

"As captain of Rangers it is a huge privilege to represent the best fans in the world. I want to highlight how important it is for you to all stay at home next weekend.

"Please don't gather in crowds especially near the city centre or the stadium.

"We want nothing more than to have you with us next Sunday but we know you are right behind us.

"The best place to support us is from home. Stay home, stay safe."

National clinical director Jason Leitch had promised a united front from Scottish football and the authorities ahead of the champions visit to Glasgow's east end.

Following crunch talks with the clubs, he said: "We had a cabinet meeting led by the Minister for Justice Humza Yousaf and the Minster for Health Mairi Gougeon and the two clubs, Police Scotland’s chief constable, me and the local authority, and at that we all decided the message was to come from all of us."
