James Tavernier makes Rangers 'responsibility' call after costly defeat to Celtic

James Tavernier has called on under-fire Rangers to take responsibility for their Premiership predicament after an Old Firm defeat left them four points adrift of Celtic in the title race.

Michael Beale’s side suffered their second league loss of the campaign just days after the humiliating Champions League reverse at the hands of PSV Eindhoven.

Beale spent significant sums to overhaul his squad during the summer transfer window but has yet to see the results after a lacklustre start to the season.

Rangers were roundly booed by a frustrated home crowd and captain Tavernier knows the Ibrox squad must respond in the right manner after another big game defeat on Beale’s watch.

Tavernier said: “Really disappointed. It’s not the result we wanted and obviously we fully understand the fans frustration.

“First half we weren’t good enough. Second half a lot better but we’ve got to be more clinical in the final third.

“Well, [the reaction] is justified. It’s as simple as that. We didn’t get the result the fans wanted and it’s totally justified.

“It’s obviously international week and everyone knows the lads who will be going away and we want them back fit and safe.

“But it’s down to us boys who are still going to be here to correct things, work hard on the training pitch and moving forward we have to obviously get better with what we do.

“It’s not an excuse [having new signings that need to gel]. But we as a team have to be responsible. All of us, collectively, and obviously individually.

“All of us, including myself, have to keep working hard and keep pushing ourselves.

“It’s obviously still early in the season. There are plenty of matches to play.

“It’s down to us to come back after this international break really playing the football we want to and get the results we want.

“Us as players have to work harder and get the results the fans want. It’s about winning games isn’t it?”
