James Tavernier injury latest as Rangers skipper faces race for fitness ahead of Celtic clash

Rangers could have James Tavernier back for next weekend's clash with Celtic.

The Ibrox skipper has been injured since the first leg of the Europa League last 16 clash with Antwerp back in February, but returned to training late last week.

And now Steven Gerrard revealed he could have his captain back involved for Rangers' Scottish Cup clash with their old rivals at Ibrox next weekend.

The full back has missed eight games for Rangers since picking up his injury and will be desperate to get back as soon as possible to help his side.

Nathan Patterson has deputised since he succumbed to a knee problem, and after an appeal hearing for the five players charged with Covid breaches was set by the SFA for after the derby clash, he will be free to play in any case.

But Gerrard would love to have his captain back for the mammoth cup tie.

This weekend's visit of Hibs in the Scottish Premiership will come too soon but in terms of after that, Gerrard said: "I'd say he's got an outside chance, James, of being involved against Celtic. He is still outside in a one-v-one capacity with the physio but he is progressing pretty well.

"In terms of Ryan, we are waiting on some news today, we have been back and forth with a couple of specialists over the last couple of days.

“He has still been doing his thing with the physios and the medical team here but we are hoping for some positive news."
